The Washington Commanders have a mountain to climb in the NFC East if they want to make the playoffs. With the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles blocking their way, new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury needs to pull off a perfect job to get the Commanders into the playoff conversation.
Some may think that the former Arizona Cardinals head coach will be taking on his role with a motivation to prove something to the critics who found his first head coaching stint to be lacking. However, the man is looking to approach the situation differently.
Washington Commanders’ Kliff Kingsbury wants offense to be more consistent
The former head coach was straightforward in denying the allegations that he’s approaching this game with any sort of extra motivation in mind.
This was his take on the matter, per Arizona Sports’ Kellan Olson:
“That’s not how I approach it,” he said. “I do this because I enjoy the game, I enjoy the players and the mentorship and the Sundays, that type of competitive situation. I never got into proving anyone wrong or right or anything like that.”
He also emphasized his learnings during his first head coaching job that he will bring to the Washington Commanders:
“Consistency and approach, and then the standard’s gotta be the standard no matter what,” he said. “No matter who you bring in, what it looks like, how the season is going — you can’t let that dictate how you approach the team and how you coach.”
He understands that both the Cowboys and Eagles have outstanding offensive units that will batter their defense, so he needs to put the offense in a spot that will allow them to trade blows with their rivals. During the 2023 season, the Commanders were mediocre in the passing game (3725 yards, 24 TDs, and 21 INTs) and terrible on the run (1592 yards and 14 TDs).
While it’s almost certain that they’ll be getting a new QB in the 2024 Draft, it takes more than that to build a successful offense. If Kliff Kingsbury manages to bring the Washington Commanders within striking distance of a Wild Card spot in 2024, his critics will have to acknowledge that his NFL return is a success.
