The Washington Commanders made a stunning announcement earlier today. They are hiring Kliff Kingsbury to be their new offensive coordinator. As a result, Kingsbury is replacing former OC Eric Bieniemy.
So, what does this new hire mean for the Commanders? If Kingsbury’s previous role is any indication, it gives Washington a link to Caleb Williams.
The USC Connection
For those of you who do not know, Kingsbury was the quarterbacks coach for the USC Trojans during the 2023 season. As a result, Kingsbury worked closely with QB Caleb Williams. This is relevant for two reasons.
The first reason is Williams is projected to be the top overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The second reason is Washington currently holds the #2 overall pick in the upcoming draft. This is part of the reason there will be speculation as to whether the Commanders will end up with Caleb Williams.
Why the Washington Commanders Should Pick Caleb Williams
The main reason why the Commanders should pick Caleb Williams is because of his athletic ability. If that was not enough, Williams put up unbelievable numbers in just three seasons at the college level. So, what did these numbers look like? Williams had 93 touchdown passes, 10,082 passing yards, and just 14 interceptions in three seasons.
Kliff Kingsbury’s Experience
Kingsbury had NFL coaching experience before he linked up with Williams at USC. From 2019-22, Kingsbury was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. After that, he was fired from the organization and at the time, people thought he might retire because he retreated to Thailand in the offseason. Eventually, Kingsbury did come back to continue his coaching career.
Chicago Bears Passing on Williams?
For Washington to land Williams, the Bears are likely going to have to pass on him. That is because, as mentioned above, the Bears have the top overall pick. There are two ways they can do this.
The first is they could end up picking a different QB such as Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels. Second, the Bears could decide to trade the draft pick and keep Justin Fields. If they go that route, it would be the second year in a row they trade the top overall draft pick and pass on a potential franchise QB.
One thing is for sure. There will be a lot of eyes on what the Bears choose to do with that pick.
