The Washington Commanders are just a day away from possibly altering the course of the franchise with the number two overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After finishing 2024 4-13, dead last in the NFC East, it was clear that Washington needed to replace a great deal of its broken parts.
Head coach Ron Rivera was fired after the season, a move that was highly anticipated and expected given how much the team underperformed during his tenure. The team also decided that Sam Howell was not the answer at quarterback and made it known early on that they would be taking a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
With the Chicago Bears all but guaranteed to take USC’s Caleb Williams, the Commanders have their pick of literally any other quarterback in the draft. For months, many have wondered if the pick would be LSU’s Jayden Daniels or UNC’s Drake Maye.
In a report by ESPN NFL insiders today, the supposed answer was revealed.
The Washington Commanders Are Expected to Select Jayden Daniels with the #2 Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft
According to Jeremy Fowler, despite the fact that Daniels and his agent are not happy with the Commanders’ Top-30 visit process, Washington still plans on selecting the Heisman Trophy winner on Thursday:
“The Commanders conducted high-level personnel meetings early this week to begin finalizing plans for the three-day draft, including what to do at No. 2 overall. The expectation from other teams picking in the top 10 is that Washington will go with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.”
Fowler does state, however, that the Commanders are also high on Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, but concedes it would be an “upset pick” if Washington were to take him.
The Washington Commanders Have the Opportunity to Build a Great Foundation in the 2024 NFL Draft
Including the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Commanders have six picks in the first three rounds. This amount of early draft capital can help Washington build a core of young players that they can build around for year to come.
Washington currently has the following picks in the upcoming draft:
- First Round (second overall)
- Second Round (36th overall)
- Second Round (40th overall)
- Third Round (67th overall)
- Third Round (78th overall)
- Third Round (100th overall)
- Fifth Round (139th overall)
- Fifth Round (152nd overall)
- Seventh Round (222nd overall)
