The Washington Commanders potentially have a chance to create tons of chaos in the 2024 NFL Draft if they were to draft quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Michigan with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington could create a lot of reaction on social media and they would also have a domino effect on other NFL teams in the 2024 NFL Draft.
McCarthy is not viewed as having the same talent level as Drake Maye of North Carolina or Jayden Daniels from LSU. Plus, J.J. McCarthy has been a polarizing figure in this NFL draft process. There has been a bunch of rumors floating around where he will land and all sorts of other information.
The Washington Commanders do have to draft a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft unless they go with one of the wide receivers which is very unlikely. If the Commanders do take McCarthy second overall, what is going to happen when the New England Patriots are on the clock at third overall?
The Washington Commanders Taking J.J. McCarthy Second Overall Means That the New England Patriots 3rd Pick Becomes Chaos
The New England Patriots would have so many choices with the third overall pick if McCarthy is off the board by this selection. They would have a choice of taking Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels with the third selection or they could trade out of it and get a king’s ransom because one of those teams would want those prospects like the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants.
New England could also use that selection on Marvin Harrison Jr., but the Patriots are in a rebuild under head coach Jarod Mayo. It will be interesting to see what the Patriots would do in this situation. New England could also very well overthink this pick if McCarthy was selected by the Commanders.
There would be a lot of other teams other than the Giants and the Vikings who could trade up with the Patriots in that trade. J.J. McCarthy would be a massive reach for the Washington Commanders and he would not be a sure-fire bet for the franchise because winning college quarterbacks don’t necessarily work in the NFL.
The Commanders would be insane to make that selection and it would be an interesting start to the career of general manager Adam Peters. However, who would not love chaos in the 2024 NFL Draft? Washington holds all of the drama cards with the number two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft whether they draft J.J. McCarthy or not.
