The Washington Commanders are one of the last teams still in the market for a head coach. They recently fired head coach Ron Rivera after four seasons. Recent reports may have revealed why Washington has waited so long to hire a head coach.
Washington Commanders Officials Traveled to Detroit
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Washington Commanders have sent officials from their organization to Detroit. Schefter’s report indicates that the Commanders plan to interview both of Detroit’s coordinators for their head coach position. This is OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn respectively.
Detroit Lions Recently Eliminated
The Lions are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Because Detroit lost the NFC Championship, other teams are now able to hire these coordinators for head coach positions. Now, it appears Washington is taking advantage of this window.
Arguments for Both Coordinators
So, why do both of these coordinators deserve an opportunity to be a head coach? For starters, it helps that both were on a team that went from missing the playoffs to appearing in the NFC Championship this year. Well, let’s take a closer look.
For Johnson, the numbers speak for themselves. In the regular season, the Lions ranked third in total yards per game (394.8) and fifth in total points per game (27.1). As for Glenn, there is an argument he can help the Commanders’ rush defense. Detroit ranked second in rushing yards allowed per game (88.8) compared to Washington ranking 27th (126.8).
