Washington Commanders suffered a defeat after being down multiple scores and being unable to pull off the comeback against the New York Jets on Sunday. While The loss was disappointing, another story line was also unfolding.
Starting quarterback Sam Howell was bench for a second week in a row. This put Jacoby Brissett in a position to come off of the bench, and rally his teammates, nearly threatening to win the game at the end. So how is the Washington Commanders backup handling a potential conflict of interest?
Washington Commanders QB Room
Between promoting himself for the starting role, and looking to support a teammate that is going through a rough patch, Jacoby Brissett is showing nothing but support and helpful advice for his younger teammate, Sam Howell.
Jacoby Brisett, himself a player that was gone through trying times during his NFL career, said nothing but supportive statements to his teammate following the game at the press conference.
Knowing how the NFL can be an isolating job to be in, he shared some of the advice that he has been giving to Sam Howell:
I told him, ‘This is going to be the hardest part of your career right now. It’s going to feel like you’re in this by yourself. It’s snowballing. It’s one thing after another. It’s one thing after another. But I know from being in this league, man the good ones find a way to get to the other side. No matter how long it takes, how hard it is.
Being a player in the NFL of course comes with scrutiny, scrutiny that is only enhanced as being a quarterback in this league. A lot is asked of you on and off the field. And many different people are tugging on you from different directions in your life.
Having come off a couple of rough games, this only gets worse, as the heat of criticism gets turned up. Jacoby Brissett alluded to this further in his comments.
Washington Commanders Support From Within
A college quarterback from North Carolina State, Jacoby Brissett has been on multiple rosters, including; being drafted bythe Patriots, and then going to the Colts, Dolphins, and Browns. Having been the hero at times, and also the one the crowds have wanted to chase with pitchforks, Jacoby Brissett offered the following:
You Surround yourself with good people. I hope he leans on me as one of those good people that will help him get through this because I know I will.
Seeing how the quarterback situation is constantly unfolding in the NFL, one aspect appears to be true.
Any team that is able to have Jacoby Brissett in their locker room will have a great team first presence for their team.
