Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa understands his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night won’t give him a lot of leverage for a contract extension this offseason. Tua finished 20/39 passing for 199 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Dolphins 26-7 loss to the Chiefs.
Reporters asked Tua if he was worried or pressured about signing an extension with the Dolphins this offseason. The Dolphins picked up Tua’s fifth-year option last offseason, so he would be entering into the final year of his contract with Miami next season if a new deal doesn’t get done.
According to Daniel Oyefusi with the Miami Herald, Tua said he isn’t worried about a contract extension after the loss.
“I’m not worried about that right now, “Tua said. “This is a moment for guys in that locker room, our team, to just be with one another to soak in this.”
Tua is asked whether he hopes a contract extension is worked out in the offseason.
A: I’m not worried about that right now. This is a moment for guys in that locker room, our team to just be with one another to soak in this.

Tua isn’t worried about a new deal from the Miami Dolphins
Tua said he has faith he can lead the Dolphins to greater success in the future.
“I don’t feel any pressure at all,” Tagovailoa said. “I have full trust in myself. I have full trust in what I’m capable of doing for our organization. Outside of that, we’re focusing on tonight and what happened. We’re going to simmer on this and see what we can do to get better from it going into next year.”

Tua has played himself out of a lot of money in the previous few weeks. The Dolphins have blown three games against elite competition to end the season.
The blowout loss against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17 cost the Dolphins a chance at the number one seed in the AFC. Their home loss in Week 18 to the Buffalo Bills forced Miami to play in a chilly Kansas City on Saturday night. The dangerously cold temperatures didn’t help the Dolphins in their blowout loss to the Chiefs.
Tua went for 56/104 passing for 609 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions during the Dolphins’ final three games.
The Dolphins aren’t likely going to give Tua a blank check this offseason after putting up those numbers in crucial games. Franchise quarterbacks have to put up better numbers in December, January, and hopefully February.
Tua won’t have to worry about his contract extension this offseason because he’ll use the 2024 season to make his final argument for a new deal.
