On Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys chose to trade for a developing quarterback to back up Dak Prescott. The Cowboys sent a 2025 fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Joe Milton III and a 2025 seventh-round pick.
As Milton showed in Week 18 when he led the Patriots to a win over the Buffalo Bills, he has the potential to become a starter in the league. That’s his hope and why New England chose to trade their 2024 sixth-round pick to Dallas instead of accepting better offers.
Dallas let their two backup quarterbacks from 2024 leave in free agency in an offseason where Dak Prescott is recovering from a season-ending hamstring injury. Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Lance waited patiently in the market until the Cowboys pulled off their trade for Milton.

The Dallas Cowboys traded for Lance in 2023

The San Francisco 49ers selected Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft. The former North Dakota State standout was traded to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick.
Lance has appeared in 12 games and started in five. He has a 2-3 record as a starter. Lance is 81-of-143 passing for 1,063 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions in his career.
Now, Lance has a chance to work with head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has a history of getting the best out of his quarterbacks.
