The Jacksonville Jaguars suffered a devastating loss last night. Not only did they fall to the Cincinnati Bengals but QB Trevor Lawrence also sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter. Lawrence’s timeline to return is unknown at the time of writing.
This has caused Jacksonville’s status in the AFC playoff picture to be uncertain. The Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are just one game behind the Jaguars in the AFC South.
Because of this, it has caused the Jaguars’ situation to be compared to one in the college football world. What is that situation? Let’s take a look.Jacksonville Jaguars Getting Voted Out?
The main joke going around social media relates to the College Football Playoff (CFP). For those of you who do not know, the CFP committee recently selected four schools to make the College Football Playoff. However, they elected not to take the Florida State Seminoles despite being an undefeated ACC champion. The main reason speculated for this was because they were an inferior team due to the season-ending injury that QB Jordan Travis suffered.
As stated above, Trevor Lawrence suffered a devastating injury in the middle of last night’s loss. As a result, Lawrence Tynes and others had fun with this. Tynes stated the following:
“The selection committee will have to take Trevor Lawrence’s injury into consideration if the Jags are to make the NFL playoffs.”
C.J. Beathard was the man tasked with replacing Trevor Lawrence last night. While he put up a valiant effort and helped get the game to overtime, it certainly adds a lot of questions as to what will happen to the Jaguars if Lawrence misses significant time.
In general, many people jump to the conclusion that a season is over for a team that loses a starting quarterback. This is especially the case if there is not an established backup quarterback on the team. While Beathard has some experience in the NFL, he is not the most highly regarded quarterback.College Football Playoff Controversy
A lot of people have expressed their outrage about Florida State missing the College Football Playoff. The main reason for this is that the Seminoles did everything in their power to win. Yet, they were essentially denied a playoff spot due to games that have not happened yet.
What would happen if the NFL did something like that? It is a good question considering how many quarterbacks have gotten hurt recently. Right now, about half of the teams that would be in the NFL playoffs today are playing with backup quarterbacks. Or, in the case of the Atlanta Falcons, a quarterback that does not definitively have the starting job.
What Happens Now?
For now, the Jacksonville Jaguars have to wait and see if this ankle sprain will cause Trevor Lawrence to miss time. Luckily, for them, this is not college football where a committee decides their fate. They control their own destiny, starting next week on the road against the Cleveland Browns.
