Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry made major news regarding the league’s rules on trades during an appearance at the NFL Combine Tuesday. The combine is known for big trade moves, but Berry isn’t just thinking about helping out the Browns.
The Cleveland Browns GM has an idea for the trade deadline
Per Josh Alper with NBC Sports, Berry said he has talked with other NFL teams about moving the trade deadline from Week 8 to Week 10:
During a Tuesday appearance on PFT Live, Browns General Manager Andrew Berry said that his team and other clubs have proposed pushing the deadline back. The proposed change would be two weeks, which would be after Week 10 of the regular season.
Berry also talked about the proposal when he met with reporters at the Scouting Combine earlier in the day and said that the deadline never moved back when the schedule moved to 17 games a few years ago.
Doing so would move the NFL more in line with other leagues in terms of when the deadline falls in the schedule and it would give teams more time to decide where they are in the playoff hunt.
Andrew Berry needs 24 votes to push the trade deadline back
Berry would need to find three-fourths of the league to agree with him during the league’s annual meeting in March in order to facilitate the change to having the trade deadline move to Week 10.
The move makes sense, honestly. The league has expanded from a 17-week regular season to an 18-week regular season. That means more injuries. Front offices need to have an extra buffer to make trades at the deadline when competitive teams know how their late-season roster is shaping up healthwise.
Hopefully, Berry can find enough votes to push the trade deadline back for the 2024 season.
