In the 2023 season, the Tennessee Titans went 6-11, missing the playoffs and wishing more success had been achieved. One of the reasons to blame for the underwhelming output of 2023 is the team’s secondary which did not have an outstanding output for the season.
Within the 2023 season, the Titans’ secondary ranked 22 out of all 32 teams. Players apart of the Titans’ secondary last season included Eric Garror, Amani Hooker, and Sean Murphy-Bunting just to name a few.
Major star lost before trade deadline of 2023 season
Before the trade deadline of the 2023 season, the Titans traded away long-time Titan, Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles, a decision that was met with mixed reviews by fans. Byard, who was born in Philadelphia, is a two-time All-Pro and has recorded 27 interceptions in his eight-year career, all with the Titans. Current Titans cornerback, Sean Murphy-Bunting, after the trade was reported, tweeted out simply saying, “Bruh,” which shows the disdain for said trade.

After seeing Byard’s output with the Eagles leading him to be released by the team, fans seem to have come around on the decision.
Could L’Jarius Sneed help the Titans’ secondary?
The Titans, however, are looking to improve on the secondary in the offseason of 2024, which may lead them to trading for a cornerback who has proved himself in the league and even just won a Super Bowl, L’Jarius Sneed.
Ahead of Tuesday’s franchise tag deadline, the Kansas City Chiefs placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. With the Chiefs making this decision, the team now has until July 15th to come to terms on a deal for the star player, trade him away, or give the nod for him to sign with another team that may show interest.
In the 2023 season, Sneed recorded 78 combined tackles and two interceptions. He also was a key player for the defense in team’s Super Bowl victory. He is being sought after as one of the most desirable assets of the 2024 offseason.
Reports have started circulating around of teams that have shown interest in Sneed. Several teams have contacted the Chiefs with interest and those teams are the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars. These are teams that all struggled protecting against the pass in the 2023 season, all ranking in the bottom ten for secondaries in the NFL.
What the Titans have built and where to go from there
The Titans have built a strong defense over the past few years with key players like Jeffrey Simmons, Denico Autry, Harold Landry, and more. However, their struggles filling in the cracks of the secondary continue to be an issue. The Titans have shown great skill at rushing the quarterback and stopping the run, but averaged giving up 227 passing yards a game in the 2023 season, ranking them 18th in the league. Sneed could be a game changer if acquired.
With the duo of new Head Coach Brian Callahan, General Manager Ran Carthon, and a whopping 62.5 million or more in cap space for the 2024 offseason, the Titans are in prime position to acquire a lot of good players, maybe L’Jarius Sneed as well, priming them for a brand new start in 2024.
