The Baltimore Ravens have had a season for the record books, and the playoffs have not even started. They have the 1 seed in the AFC and will get the first round bye this week so they are just waiting to see who their next victim is on their way to the post season.
While Lamar Jackson, and the offense has been one of if not the best in the league in their own right, the defense has done something that no defense has ever done before in the NFL. The Ravens defense literally does everything well, and they are going to need to continue to do that come playoff time.
Baltimore and specifically Lamar Jackson, do not have a good history in the playoffs in the last 5 years. Lamar is 1-3 in the post season and this is by far the best chance they have had in recent memory to not only go far in the post season but to win it all.
Baltimore Ravens Get The Triple Crown On Defense
The Ravens have had been absolutely amazing this year on both sides of the ball, and they have done something that has never been done before on defense. They had 60 sacks on the season and led the league in that category as they are the best in the league at getting after the quarterback. They also led the league in opponents points per game with 16.5. They also led the entire league in takeaways with 31.
There has never been a defense before in league history to achieve this feat. There have been unbelievable defenses throughout the years but none have achieved the triple crown on defense. To lead the NFL in sacks, opponents points per game, and takeaways is something beyond special and something we will probably not see again.
This team will need the defense to be at it’s best for the next month if they want to achieve the goals they have, as the AFC has some stacked offenses. However, no matter what happens in the post season, to achieve this triple crown is something special in it of itself. A defense usually does one thing very well and even that makes the defense scary.
To lead the entire NFL in getting to the quarterback, getting takeaways, and they let up the least points per game makes a defense historically scary. If the Ravens can replicate any of their regular season defense in the post season, and with Lamar Jackson playing well, they will be the ones holding the Lombardi trophy at the end of the season.
In my latest 1:1 w/ Jadeveon Clowney, we discuss the Ravens elite defense:
“I feel like our whole defense should have made the Pro Bowl if you want me to be honest.”
He also shares why comfort with the team has elevated his play.
