The Texas Longhorns’ chances of making the College Football Playoffs took a significant hit before Championship Weekend after the committee released their latest rankings. The committee gave the top four spots, in order, to undefeated teams Georgia, Michigan, Washington, and Florida State.
The next four, in order, are Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, and Alabama. All teams listed above will play in their respective conference championship, except Ohio State.
But the Longhorns’ path to the top four looks impossible, even if they beat Oklahoma State on Saturday. According to Brett McMurphy with the Action Network, the committee kept the Longhorns behind Oregon in all of their rankings this season.
McMurphy thinks the Longhorns are “screwed” out of the playoffs at this point. Should Oregon defeat Washington on Saturday, the Longhorns can’t leapfrog the Ducks.
Texas is screwed. @CFBPlayoff selection committee has had Longhorns behind Oregon in all 5 rankings this season – despite more Top 25 wins – & has no chance to jump Ducks, if both win conference titles

The Longhorns have more Top 25 wins. They also have a better win than Ohio State or Oregon. The Longhorns beat Alabama on the road by double digits earlier this season.
College football fans react to Texas being “screwed”
The Longhorns have a slim chance of making it. Florida State losing, with Georgia and Washington winning, seems to be their best bet at this point.
Fans reacted to McMurphy’s point on social media. Here are the best takes of the Longhorns being screwed before Championship Weekend.
More ranked wins, a common opponent, harder strength of schedule. Like what more do they need ?

Oregon to lay an egg and Texas to win 100-0 basically

Let's be real. Losses Also matter. Oklahoma beating you at a neutral site is worse than Oregon losing by three to Washington and they honestly had the chance to win the game on 4th down

It’s all gonna settle itself, if they beat a #3 undefeated Washington they would have a win on par with Texas’ best win and have a better loss than Texas (not to mention they avenge their only loss) And if they don’t win then Texas jumps them anyways.

"we are comparing everything"…are you really?
Texas
-better victory over common opponent
-higher SOS
-better SOR
-more wins vs CFP Top 25Oregon

There is zero reason for Texas to schedule a tough non conference opponent moving forward if they are left out of the playoff at 12-1.
It sucks for the fans but the committee is making it clear blowing out weak opponents is more impressive than beating solid opponents.

If Texas goes 12-1 and gets left out of the playoffs I’m signing up pic.twitter.com/KeU1tXKaYW

Texas could legitimately win the natty if they get in. This is so frustrating when garbage teams with zero shot at winning like Michigan State Cincinnati Notre Dame have taken playoff spots in the past.
