On Sunday, news broke of yet another high-end football player getting in trouble while behind the wheel of a car. According to multiple sources, including The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, former Texas football star defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat was arrested early in the day and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI). Sweat, one of the highest-ranked interior defensive linemen in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, is not the first high-profile player to run into legal troubles this month.
Last week, Kansas City Chiefs star rookie receiver and Super Bowl winner Rashee Rice caused a multi-car collision while racing in Texas. Rice fled the scene on foot, while reports later surfaced that his vehicle stored a misdemeanor level of marijuana. The NFL and its fans have reacted quickly to these instances of poor judgment. However, it hit another level of disappointment on Sunday, with Sweat making headlines for a DWI weeks before the draft. The shock and disappointment in the NFL world’s reaction was palpable, with no shortage of reactions flooding social media.
NFL World Reacts to T’Vondre Sweat DWI
Former Texas Longhorns standout T’Vondre Swift will need to face the music with the NFL and its 32 franchises after being arrested on Sunday for a DWI. Considered a potential second-round draft pick, Sweat could now drop in the NFL draft, resulting in a significant financial loss for the once-Texas football standout. This turn of events could potentially alter the course of his career, a fact that is not lost on the NFL fans who quickly took to social media, mainly Twitter (also known as X), to either bash Sweat or show their disappointment in the soon-to-be rookies’ actions.

I had Texas DT T’Vondre Sweat going in Round 2 (No. 52) to the Los Angeles Rams in my 7-Round NFL Mock Draft. Will be interesting to see how/if his arrest affects his draft position. Glad nobody was hurt. https://t.co/QCxfAMbvSD https://t.co/LHvEBG1JUz

It's not unreasonable to think the Bengals could take T'Vondre Sweat off of their draft board after this…https://t.co/7u8Mr2ePSc

I still believe in T'Vondre Sweat. He made a very dumb mistake. The question now is does Nick Caserio draft big Sweat in the 3rd or 4th round (two picks)? Before this DWI incident I had the Texans drafting Sweat at pick 42 or 59 in the second round. He'll drop a round or two now.

Former Texas Football DT T’Vondre Sweat: Stellar in 2023
T’Vondre Sweat, the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year, shined with Texas football last season. The All-American registered 45 tackles, eight TFLs, and two sacks while playing on the interior of Texas’ defensive line. He also batted down four passes while helping lead the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff. The fifth-year senior posted three tackles in the team’s loss to the Washington Huskies in the semi-finals.
Sweat started his college career in 2019, playing sparingly for Texas. However, as a sophomore, he tallied 22 tackles and four TFLs before accumulating another two sacks in 2021. He finally broke out in 2022, tallying 30 tackles and 2.5 TFLs. According to NFL Draft Buzz, Sweat is the top-ranked defensive tackle in this upcoming draft class. At 366 pounds, he is in the 100th percentile among his peers.
