The Texas A&M Aggies have had a bit of an overhaul in the athletic department since the program parted ways with Jimbo Fisher, who never worked out in College Station despite having the top recruiting classes and every resource at his disposal..
According to Billy Liucci of TexAgs, Texas A&M will name Trev Alberts as its next athletic director. The Aggies are expected to announce the move shortly with Alberts leaving his alma mater, Nebraska, after three years in Lincoln. A big move in College Station to nab one of the Big Ten’s best.
Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle was the first to report the move.
“Texas A&M University is set to hire Trev Alberts as its next Director of Athletics,” the TexAgs report read. “The news was originally reported by Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle on X, formerly Twitter. TexAgs’ co-owner and executive editor Billy Liucci has confirmed Zwerneman’s report.”
Ross Bjork was previously Texas A&M’s athletic director but left in favor of the Ohio State job.. A move to leave the SEC and join a top Big Ten program, Alberts is now pulling the reverse. He will now lead the Aggies into a new era in college athletics, mainly on the football side.
The Aggies are getting longtime college sports administrator and College Football Hall of Famer. Trev Alberts closed out his third year as Director of Athletics at the University of Nebraska in 2023-24. Alberts returned to his alma mater after spending 12 years at Nebraska-Omaha, guiding the program through a successful transition to the Division I level.
In his first season at Nebraska in 2021-22, Alberts helped the Huskers navigate the ever-changing landscape of Name, Image and Likeness guidelines for the benefit of Nebraska student-athletes. He led the development of the N-Vest Nebraska program to award $5,980 per year to student-athletes who meet academic benchmarks.
Alberts also spearheaded the charge to complete the fundraising for Nebraska’s Go Big Project, which will provide Nebraska football with a new facility scheduled to open this fall. The project will also house academic, life skills, nutrition and support services for all Nebraska student-athletes.
He continued to make a mark on Nebraska Athletics in his second year. Alberts conducted a thorough, nationwide search for a new leader for the Husker football program in the fall of 2022 that resulted in the hiring of Matt Rhule as Nebraska’s new head coach. Rhule has a proven track record as a program builder at the college level, winning conference championships at both Temple and Baylor. Since his hiring, Rhule has energized the Nebraska fan base and attracted a top-25 recruiting class to the Husker program.
Alberts also spearheaded a new 15-year multimedia right agreement between Nebraska Athletics and Playfly Sports, an emerging leader in sports marketing, media and technology. The partnership is one of the nation’s most comprehensive multimedia rights agreements and has a total value for $301 million for Nebraska over the life of the contract.
Nebraska’s athletic achievements in 2022-23 included a NCAA top-10 finishes by wrestling, rifle, bowling, women’s outdoor track and field, men’s gymnastics and men’s indoor track and field. In all, 10 Husker teams posted top-20 national finishes, while the men’s track team captured the Big Ten outdoor title under first-year coach Justin St. Clair.
Texas A&M Aggies Move On From Ross Bjork With Vision For Athletic Success Across All Sports With Trev Alberts
The Aggies had success in many ways under Ross Bjork — who left to take the job at Ohio State — but it’s impossible not to hold him accountable for giving Jimbo FIsher such a massive contract and the football team took a step back under their old head coach.
Ultimately football brings in the most money, especially in the SEC, so that’s a hire any AD has to get right and
Texas A&M is beginning a brand new chapter in the two most important positions for an SEC college program.
Trev Alberts was applauded for his hire of Matt Rhule, who thrived as a college head coach at Temple and Baylor before going to the NFL where he wasn’t set up for success. Nebraska’s football team and culture looked instantly revitalized in his first season in Lincoln, so expect Trev Alberts to work closely with new Aggies’ head coach Mike Elko, who worked wonders with Duke but is heading into his first season as the head coach.
Obviously Alberts will face the challenges any major Power Five AD does in the new world of NIL and the transfer portal, but he proved he could handle the pressure at Nebraska with ease.
In the long run, Trev Alberts could end up as an upgrade over Ross Bjork.
