TCU Football certainly wants to get back to the National Championship game in the future, and they are making a big push for that with their current standing in the 2025 recruiting class. Although the transfer portal has become a trendy place to get talent immediately, teams are starting to realize the importance of having a strong recruiting class to help bolster the roster and image of the team.
Obviously signing day for the class of 2025 is still months away, and thousands of high school athletes will see their recruiting grades soar and fall as this upcoming season gets going, but as of right now, TCU is sitting very well, not just in the Big 12, but the entire country.
TCU Football is Putting Together a Very Strong 2025 Class

One key in today’s competitive field is recruiting and getting players to commit well before their senior year. With so many players flipping commitments and current players entering the transfer portal, the hope is that if a team can get 10 players to commit, at least half of them will stay committed. The more commitments there are, the more likely they will stay.
In the case of TCU, they went after the class of 2025 early and went after them hard. Here is what ESPN wrote about their recruiting class:
“They (TCU) landed in-state ESPN 300 quarterback Ty Hawkins, a passer with a strong arm and smooth release. He’s thrown for over 2,000 yards each of his last two high school seasons, and as a junior, he completed nearly 70% of his passes.
TCU added some potential future receiving targets in Ed Small, who displays strong ball skills, and Chance Ables, who has good length and body control to adjust.
On defense, the Frogs have added some talented pieces to their front. Woodfork was a big in-state win and is an explosive defender while Jared Martin was an excellent addition out of California as he possesses good initial quickness and can bend well and both can not only get after the QB but can be well-rounded defenders. From in-state, defensive tackle Floyd Guidry can use good initial quickness and leverage to be disruptive.”
TCU Ranks Top of the Big 12, 13th Nationally

As the Big 10 and SEC continue to flex their muscles with most of the nation’s top classes, TCU is doing all it can to prevent those two conferences from monopolizing the Top 20 in recruiting. They are doing well, currently sitting at 13th. Ahead of them, only Clemson from the ACC and Notre Dame, which is Independent, are non-Big 10 and SEC teams.
What may be more of a story (for now) is the teams that TCU is ahead of. Currently, they sit ahead of USC (15th), Michigan (16th), Texas (17th), Oregon (22nd), and Washington (26th). If TCU can find a way to remain ranked higher than any of these teams once the final rankings are released following the 2024 season, it will be a huge accomplishment not just for them but the entire Big 12.
The next highest-ranked Big 12 team is UCF (29th), followed by West Virginia (30th) and Oklahoma State (31st)
Big 12 Is Strong Overall, Weak On Top

There is a narrative that the Big 12 is the least talented P4 conference and perhaps the deepest top to bottom. There isn’t a Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Wake Forest, or Virginia that seems to struggle yearly. It seems that just about any team can beat or lose to any other team in the conference. This is great for entertainment but terrible for getting teams into the playoffs or building the conference’s brand as being elite.
The same seems to hold for the early recruiting rankings.
As mentioned above, TCU is the only Big 12 team in the current Top 25, while there are four ACC teams. This, of course, suggests that the ACC is in a better spot than the Big 12. However, when looking at the rest of the Top 35, there are six Big 12 teams and only five ACC teams. Sure, these are similar numbers, but six teams ranked 29th-38th shows the league’s parody and depth.
Again, these numbers are very early figures, but they could indicate what to expect later.
