Super Bowl-Winning QB Linked To Atlanta Falcons In 1 Wild Scenario

The Denver Broncos pushed their chips to the center of the table for quarterback Russell Wilson, but that gamble hasn’t paid off. It’s even performed so frustratingly badly that Wilson’s name has been appearing in rumors. Even the Atlanta Falcons are getting a mention as a potential suitor of the Super Bowl-winning quarterback should the Broncos move on from the former Wisconsin Badgers signal-caller.

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper, in his 2024 mock draft piece, tossed in the name of Wilson as a possible target for the Falcons since Atlanta is likely to miss out on the top quarterbacks in the draft as the team is only picking eighth overall.

Here we go, another team in the top 10 that hasn’t yet hired its new coach. The good thing about this projection: I don’t have another quarterback with a top-10 grade, so I’m not going to force one to Atlanta. I wonder if it might be a trade suitor for Justin Fields or instead look to the free agent market for Kirk Cousins or cut candidate Russell Wilson. (If the Falcons hire Jim Harbaugh, I reserve my right to predict Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy to join his former coach.)

The Broncos are very likely to part ways with Wilson. The writing on the wall is already there, as Denver benched him late in the 2023 NFL season. The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks via a blockbuster deal in 2022 and signed him to a monster five-year $242.5 million contract extension.

Should The Atlanta Falcons Go After Russell Wilson?

The Atlanta Falcons mostly utilized Desmond Ridder as a starter in 2023 and got Taylor Heinicke as well, but neither shined. Even before the Falcons’ season ended, it was clear that this was a franchise in need of a new quarterback. Is Wilson going to be the answer if the opportunity to get him presents itself?
