The Buffalo Bills are trading All-Pro electrifying wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, for draft pick compensation, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in a blockbuster trade that figures to shape the AFC Super Bowl race.
Diggs’ name had been the subject of rampant trade speculation throughout the offseason. But, it was the reigning AFC South champion and potential AFC Super Bowl favorite Houston Texans who wound up winning the Diggs sweepstakes.
Houston sends the second-round pick the Texans acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings to the Bills, in exchange for Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round pick, and a fifth-round selection in 2025, according to a report from Ian Rapoport.
Diggs is coming off one of the most prolific seasons of his career, and a sixth-straight season surpassing 1,000 receiving yards after catching 107 passes for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns.
Stefon Diggs Adds Prolific Weapon for Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud
Stefon Diggs now departs what has been a perennial Super Bowl favorite in the AFC, to arguably the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs representing the conference in a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Landing with the Texans, Diggs becomes the focal point of what is already a dynamic receiving corps at ascending star quarterback and former No. 2 overall draft pick, C.J. Stroud’s arsenal.
With Diggs at the top of the Texans’ wide receiver depth chart, he’ll serve as a dynamic deep threat in a group that already included consistent weapon Nico Collins and young playmakers Tank Dell and Noah Brown.
“Who can separate? Who can find a way to get open?” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters during the NFL Combine, when discussing the profile of wide receivers Houston would target. “If you have that one redeeming quality that you can separate – that’s what we’re looking for.”
Diggs certainly fits that bill.
It’s easy to see why the Houston Texans targeted Stefon Diggs after his standout stint with the Buffalo Bills where he was a favorite target of quarterback Josh Allen and one of the most dangerous deep-threats in the sport.
Meanwhile, Allen posted a prolific 95.5 passer rating when targeting Diggs, and that sort of consistency could significantly hasten Stroud’s continued development.
Through his first nine seasons, with the Bills and Minnesota Vikings, Diggs has caught 810 passes for 9,995 yards and 67 career touchdowns.
Texans’ Aggressive Offseason Plan
The Texans entered the offseason with the most cap space in the NFL, and have not been shy about using every available resource to build around Stroud.
After making a run to the AFC Divisional round, general manager Nick Caserio, Ryans, and the Texans seem intent on maximizing the window of Stroud’s rookie contract.
In addition to trading for Diggs, the Texans signed premier edge rusher Danielle Hunter, added veteran running back Joe Mixon, cornerbacks Jeff Okudah and C.J. Henderson, while dropping elite run-stuffer Foley Fatukasi along the defensive line, just to name a few moves.
However, trading for Diggs might be the splashiest move of all with the most upside for the Texans in 2024 and beyond.
