AN NFL insider suggested this week the Buffalo Bills could cut star wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the offseason. Diggs has had a tumultuous time with the Bills in the previous few seasons.
Diggs was upset with the offense and his lack of touches during the postseason last year. He was reportedly asked to leave OTAs this spring by a member of the Bills coaching staff.
Things started smoothly for Diggs and the offense. But Digg’s numbers have dropped as the season has gone on. He’s scored two touchdowns since the trade deadline. Diggs’ best game in December was his four-reception, 48-receiving yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Buffalo Bills could ship Diggs in the direction of a rival
Mike Florio with NBC Sports suggested the Bills could cut Diggs in the offseason. Diggs, who wants to win a Super Bowl, would be free to sign with the wide-receiver-needy Kansas City Chiefs:
It’s possible he’s simply ready to move on from the Bills.
That becomes one of the significant questions of the looming offseason. Will he be released? Will he be cut?
The numbers simply don’t justify the salary at this point. Diggs had 100 or more yards in five of the first six games of the season. Since then, he’s had none. And while he’s over 1,000 yards for the season, he’s had fewer than 30 yards in three of the last four games — and only one touchdown since November 5…
Can he still get it done? That might not be known until he gets a chance to do it with another team, like the Chiefs.
Diggs signed a four-year deal worth $96 million in 2022. That’s a significant amount of the Bills cap space for a wide receiver who has fewer than ten touchdowns this season.
The regular season stats will be forgotten if Diggs and the Bills have a fruitful postseason. Diggs doesn’t like losing, and he especially doesn’t like losing when he’s not given a chance to impact the game.
Quarterback Josh Allen will certainly look his way more in January. The Bills don’t want a repeat of the Diggs incident from the Cincinnati Bengals postseason matchup last year.
