The growing speculation surrounding the 2024 NFL Draft is that three quarterbacks will be selected with the first three selections. There is no denying that the three teams at the top of the draft, the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, and Washington Commanders, could all use help under center. For months the top of the draft was expected to go Caleb Williams then Drake Maye then Jayden Daniels. However, there has been a major shift in odds to be the number two pick on DraftKings Sportsbook, Jayden Daniels has passed Drake Maye as the favorite to be the number two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The New Favorite Jayden Daniels at -115
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels had an electrifying year in 2023 during his Heisman campaign and has shot up draft boards. For a while he has been projected to be the third quarterback selected, after Williams and Maye. Daniels accounted for a sensational 50 total touchdowns in his final season with the Tigers. It appears that hype has continued into the pre-draft months as Daniels is now projected to be the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
All eyes will be on how big of a presence the Washington Commanders will have at Jayden Daniels pro day at LSU on March 27th.
The Old Favorite Drake Maye at -105
North Carolina prototype quarterback Drake Maye has been written in as the second-best quarterback in this draft class after Caleb Williams since 2024 mock drafts arose last June. Maye saw a decrease in passing yards and touchdowns in his final season for the Tar Heels, and some doubt has crept into his draft outlook. In the past we have seen prospects who were highly touted seemingly lose hype as the draft approaches. However, even if Maye does not go second, he is now the favorite to go third, revealing that the Sportsbooks still expect three quarterbacks to start the 2024 NFL Draft.
Drake Maye’s pro day at North Carolina is scheduled just one day after LSU’s, on March 28th.
What Will Washington Do?
The team that currently hold the second overall pick is the Washington Commanders, and they are heavily expected to select a quarterback. In February the Commanders hired former Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator. Kingsbury has almost exclusively had a dual threat quarterback in his offense. The Commanders have spent their offseason building up their offense adding Austin Ekeler, Zach Ertz, and Tyler Biadsz, to create some comfort for their new franchise leader. The Commanders also brought in Marcus Mariota, a dual threat quarterback, to serve as their backup, perhaps another indication of who the Commanders will decide to pick in this years draft.
I wouldn’t say Jayden Daniels is a lock to be the number two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but I would not be surprised to see these odds continue to favor Daniels being the next Washington Commander quarterback.
