What was supposed to be a building year for the Seattle Seahawks turned into tragedy after ending the 2023 season in a worse position than they were the year prior.
The team already cut their losses and parted ways with long-time head coach Pete Carroll. Geno Smith’s future is also up in the air after failing to live up to his incredible 2022 season.
In a time of uncertainty for many Seahawks fans, this is the time when their rookies should step up to the call and assure the 12th Man that everything will be alright.
The Athletic’s Michael Shawn-Duggar listed off several Seahawks rookies who should step up and help standout rookie Devon Witherspoon, the highest-drafted rookie during Carroll and GM John Schneider’s era, to steady the ship.
Seattle Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Expectations were high for Jaxon Smith-Njigba after being selected with the 20th pick of the draft as a dynamic second option behind WR1 DK Metcalf. There were question marks about his game due to the injury he suffered in his final year at Ohio State, but his 2021 showing was enough for Carroll and Schneider to take a swing.
He finished his rookie campaign with a respectable 628 yards on 628 receptions for 4 TDs and 10 yards per catch. Whoever, ends up coaching the Seahawks will likely expect him to step up as Tyler Lockett is approaching the end of his prime as WR2.
Seattle Seahawks LB Derick Hall
Derick Hall was a standout pass rusher coming out of Auburn who was expected to put pressure on the opposing QB when he was selected with the 37th pick.
While he did play in every Seahawks game his rookie year, he wasn’t able to snag the starting job from Boye Mafe. Moreover, Witherspoon–a corner–was able to get more sacks (3.0) than him (0.0). If he wants to get more playing time, he should up his pass rush against speedier and stronger offensive linemen.
Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet
There was considerable hype around Zach Charbonnet when he moved north from SoCal. He was an outstanding stalwart for Chip Kelly’s UCLA Bruins and was expected to be the perfect contrast to Kenneth Walker III’s powerful running style.
He performed well in the snaps he was given. He rushed for 462 yards on 106 attempts for a TD and 4.3 yards per carry. He will likely be given more opportunities to line up at the back next season, and he should grab this opportunity to cement his place.
