Geno Smith was supposed to be the solution for the Seattle Seahawks’ QB1 problem after doing a brilliant job of replacing Russell Wilson in 2022. Many believed coming into the 2023 season that the journeyman QB has finally found the place he can call home.
However, a dismal 2023 saw his future in flux once again. With the West Virginia product’s contract built to give the team a chance to pick a new QB immediately, his fate is now up to the hands of the team’s new head coach.
Seattle Seahawks expected to either keep or trade Geno Smith this week
According to Tacoma News Tribune’s Gregg Bell, the Seahawks will be expected to decide on Smith as Macdonald begins to get settled as the team’s HC.
Doubters will probably say that it’s time to move on from the 33-year-old QB. However, it seems like the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator sees things differently:
Schneider and Macdonald have given zero indication they are ready to move on from Smith. He turns 34 during next season. His contract runs through 2025.
When he was asked at his introductory press conference Feb. 1 what he thinks of the Seahawks’ quarterback, Macdonald said: “Pretty sure he’s at the Pro Bowl right now.”
The vote of confidence shows encouraging signs that Macdonald’s reign over the Seattle Seahawks will at least start with Smith under center.
Geno Smith might have fumbled a bit compared to his first Pro Bowl year, but his 3624 passing yards and 20 touchdowns are still numbers produced by a first-rate quarterback.
Aside from their QB1, the Seahawks head coach is also expected to find a solution for Drew Lock. The former Bronco was a terrific replacement, showing his worth when Smith was sidelined with injury. They will likely have to fight off suitors to keep him in Seattle.
If the team is going to put their trust in Smith, he will be eager to repay the trust his head coach placed in him. With a talented WR1 in DK Metcalf, Smith will be looking to bounce back in the NFC West that has high-powered offenses in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
