The Seattle Seahawks do not have much cap space to work with and are $6.46 million over the cap. Since they are over the cap, Seattle must restructure, renegotiate, and release players to be salary cap compliant by Wednesday, March 12 at 3:00 PM CT, also known as the start of the new league year. Being under the cap would allow the Seahawks to sign or re-sign free agents, including a key defensive starter.
The Seattle Seahawks star linebacker is set to hit free agency

Ernest Jones IV completed the final year of his 4-year, $4,785,852 rookie contract, which he signed during the 2021 offseason, and is set to hit free agency during the 2025 offseason. Jones had an interesting 2024 campaign and was traded from the Rams to the Titans during the roster cutdown deadline and from the Titans to the Seahawks before the NFL Trade Deadline. The star linebacker played well with Seattle, recording 94 tackles, one TFL, 0.5 sacks, one interception, two pass deflections, and one forced fumble in ten starts as the team’s green dot wearer.
Despite stalling contract talks in January until the offseason, both parties have expressed mutual interest in an extension.
Seahawks aim to keep key defensive starter for 2025

During an appearance on his KIRO-AM radio show on Friday, general manager John Schneider said he obviously wants Ernest Jones IV back. Schneider also went on to say that they have had great communication with his agents, and both parties hope to get a deal done. However, he adds that Jones could hit the open market and depart in free agency.
“Obviously we want Ernest back,” Schneider said on his KIRO-AM radio show, via Michael-Shawn Dugar of the Athletic. “We’ve talked to his guys; we’ve had great communication with them, and we’re hoping we’re able to accomplish that. Some guys, at some point you can get too close to the end of the season where they want to see what free agency looks like. So, now they can go out and see what their market is, and understandably so.”
Here’s a look at PFF’s projected contract for Ernest Jones
