It is a common problem this season that teams without their starting quarterback have struggled and the situation with the Seattle Seahawks has been no different. Last week, Seattle found themselves without starting quarterback Geno Smith and certainly struggled against an elite San Francisco 49ers defense. Regardless of talent, consistency is a huge attribute at the quarterback position and missing their regular simply threw off the offense.
Geno Smith to Return in Huge Monday Night Matchup
Luckily this week, it looks like the Seahawks will be back to normal after Smith expects to buckle up his chinstrap against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Smith was out this past week after a groin injury suffered in practice last Thursday following a devastating loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Head Coach Pete Carroll was clearly ecstatic regarding the prospect of his starting quarterback returning to the lineup.
“He had a good lift this morning, so we’ll see how each day goes, but one day at a time and we’ll figure that out,” Carroll said. “I know it’s a big concern to everybody, but he feels really good. He threw the heck out of the ball in the morning session, so we’ll see what happens today with the [real] hope that he’s ready to go. And if not, Drew’s going to be there. We’ll mix reps to make sure that everybody’s prepared, but that’s a good sign for us and for Geno’s sake. He wants to play in the worst way.”
Backup quarterback Drew Lock started against the 49ers and submitted a valiant effort to keep his team in the game. Lock was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and was attached as an incentive in the Russell Wilson trade.
“He did everything,” Carroll said. “He moved around just fine. It was a walk-through, so we’ll go to practice this afternoon and see how that goes and just take one session at a time. But he feels really good. He’s ready to go.”
Smith has already been injured this season as he heavily bruised his triceps in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams in November. Before practice last Thursday, Smith complained that his arm was not yet “close to 100%”. Pete Carroll expressed that as of his knowledge that injury has been completely resolved.
Seattle was a different team without their starting quarterback in the lineup this week as he is usually an excellent game manager who avoids turnovers. In the loss to the 49ers, Lock threw for two interceptions which ultimately cost Seattle the victory.
After a string of tough losses, Seattle finds themselves tied with the Green Bay Packers for the final wild card spot. It is important to note that Green Bay holds the tie breaker over Seattle after due to head-to-head win percentage of all the teams tied at 6-7. Seattle will look to close out the season on a high note with the return of their starting quarterback.
