The San Francisco 49ers have been having an amazing year so far, but the entire NFL world just watched them get beat down hard but the top AFC contender in the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas night. Brock Purdy was the MVP favorite going into the game and left the game far from that after throwing four interceptions, and definitely having his worst game as a starter in his short career.
Lamar Jackson of the Ravens should grab the highest individual award the NFL offers this year over Christian McCaffery after going into their house and giving them a proper beat down. While the entire NFL world is blaming Brock for the 49ers embarrassing loss, there is a trend for head coach Kyle Shanahan that is much more concerning for the 49ers than brock having one bad game.
Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers is 0-38 in games in which his team trails going into the fourth quarter since 2017. Every other team in the NFL has a win in those circumstances but Shanahan’s teams are literally a non win team if you can be beating them by 8 going into the fourth.
The San Francisco 49ers Beat Down Was not Just Brock Purdy’s Fault
Brock Purdy had the worst game of his career by far throwing four interceptions and making bad decisions all throughout the game. But the game highlighted much more than Purdy’s first bad game as a starter in his young career. Shanahan’s teams are simply not good when playing from behind late in the game. The 49ers need to figure that out as you can expect to just be beating teams all throughout the playoffs.
In the playoffs you’re going to be down at some points and you need the intensity and the culture to be able to be a comeback team. Shanahan’s 0-38 record doesn’t bode well as now history is not on their side when they go down in games.
Shanahan didn’t seem to concerned in his post game press conference, as it is just a regular season game and they have all their goals still ahead of them. You can’t get too low in the regular season when the playoffs are just around the corner, Shanahan said:
“Nothing I’m concerned about, but you know how stingers are and it could be worse tomorrow, but I think it’ll be alright.”
That is definitely the right mindset to have as a head coach, but Shanahan needs to address this flaw of his teams personally as there is a lot of evidence now to show that his teams do not make comebacks in the fourth quarter. You need to be a team that has grit if you want to hold the Lombardi trophy at the end of the year.
The sky isn’t falling for the 49ers at all, they are an amazing team with a stacked roster and a great head coach. It seems like this is just Shanahan’s Achilles heal for this 49ers team. They can definitely route teams in the playoffs but the entire NFL world will definitely be interested to see what happens if the 49ers go down in a playoff game.
