The San Francisco 49ers kick off the preseason on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. It seems we may see a lot of Trey Lance. With Brock Purdy still in recovery mode, there was some question about what the 49ers would do at quarterback for the preseason. Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed his plans to start Lance on Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance To Start On Sunday
Here is the full quote from Shanahan about Lance.
“It’s not set in stone, it can always change. But right now, we’re trying to plan on giving Trey most of the first half and Sam most of the second half. We wanted to balance it out that way. I rarely play starters in Week 1. I have before. It usually depends on how those two practices (49ers/Raiders joint practices) go. And we had two real hard practices that we were real happy with. So I don’t plan on playing many starters, so we’ll have a couple of groups in there. But we’ve got enough guys that can go out there and hopefully make some plays for both quarterbacks.”
The plan is for Sam Darnold to play most of the second half so we should get a great look at both quarterbacks.
Increasing His Value
While some may read this as the 49ers preferring Lance over Darnold, I see it another way. I think the team is ready to move on from Lance. However, there is very little interest as his value is at an all-time low. The team needs to show the other 31 teams that Lance has value and can help their team. If Lance can come out and have a great showing, teams may start to see what the price for the former third-overall pick might be.
The San Francisco 49ers are hoping that Trey Lance can make the most of his golden opportunity. Lance needs to show promise if his career is going to continue in the NFL.
