The San Francisco 49ers will leave no stone unturned in their attempt to return to the Super Bowl next season. San Francisco continues to post dominant regular-season showings. Still, two Super Bowl losses and a pair of conference championship defeats have left their fans wanting more in the Kyle Shannahan era. On Thursday, the 49ers made a rostering signing, bolstering their secondary depth while taking a flyer on a former second-round draft pick.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the ‘9ers have inked five-year NFL vet Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal. San Francisco continues to add their already elite defense, signing defensive linemen Leonard Floyd and Maliek Collins, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, and cornerback Isaac Yiadom this offseason. Floyd headlines the group, posting 10.5 sacks in 2023.
Rock Ya-Sin: Inks Deal with San Francisco 49ers
Rock Ya-Sin, the 34th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, spent his first three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. As a rookie, the Temple product recorded 62 tackles, two TFLs, a pass defended, and an interception of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles. He posted similar statistics in 2020, posting 45 tackles and recording his lone interception against the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers.
After a dip in production over 13 games in 2021, the Colts traded Sin to the Las Vegas Raiders for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. Sin appeared in 11 games, starting nine and collecting 45 tackles. However, he did not register an interception for a second consecutive season. Sin played out a one-year, $6 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens last season. The 27-year-old operated as a reserve piece, accumulating 13 tackles and two passes defended across 14 appearances.
San Francisco 49ers: Add Depth to Secondary
San Francisco returns its starting cornerback duo of Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir for the 2024 campaign. Ward posted a team-best five interceptions and 23 passes defended in 2023. Meanwhile, Lenoir had 84 tackles, 10 passes defended, and three interceptions. Subset corner Ambry Thomas also returns after a 43-tackle, one-interception season. However, backup corner Isaiah Oliver inked a contract with the New York Jets this offseason.
Thursday’s acquisition, Rock Ya-Sin, and journeyman Isaac Yiadom will likely fill in behind Ward and Lenoir. Sin joins his third team in as many years, while Yiadom spent the past 23 games with the New Orleans Saints. He has 158 tackles, 26 passes defended, and two picks across six NFL seasons.
