San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is slowly recovering from his UCL injury. While the team is optimistic that he will be ready for the 2023 season, Purdy himself has said that he truly does not know. During an appearance on the “New Heights” podcast, Purdy told Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce that he is learning to throw left-handed.

San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy A Lefty Now?
Apparently Purdy is preparing for anything. “Just throwing the ball lefty, just around the house and stuff,” Purdy said. “Got to be ready for anything at this point.” The surgery he had in March has an expected recovery time of six months which would put him right up to week 1. However, that is assuming everything goes as planned. The UCL injury is a tricky one and the elbow is a huge part of the throwing motion. If Purdy is not ready the 49ers are going to have some decisions to make about the quarterback position.

This Wouldn’t Actually Happen, Right?
It would be unprecedented if a quarterback changed throwing hands and was still able to play at a high level. Most likely, Purdy is having fun with throwing lefty around the house, and on this type of podcast, it isn’t surprising to joke about switching throwing hands. George Kittle joked about this on the sidelines during the NFC Championship game after the injury. This would be the craziest development in the NFL in a while if it actually happened.
If the 49ers’ best option is a left-handed Brock Purdy, they are in trouble. Sam Darnold is on the roster and Kyle Shanahan has proven he can take a subpar quarterback and make them look amazing. The team might also poke around to some other teams and see if some veterans are available. Whatever the case may be, the San Francisco 49ers QB drama is a huge storyline to follow.
