The San Francisco 49ers are headed back to the Super Bowl. After beating the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, the 49ers get a shot to win their first Super Bowl since the 1990s. However, they’ll have to go through one of the best quarterbacks of this generation to do so.
The cornerback position has been one that fans have wanted an upgrade at for quite some time. Now one report is surfacing that would do that in a major way.
The San Francisco 49ers Could Land Game Changing All-Pro Cornerback
According to the NFL Staff at Bleacher Report:
Top San Francisco 49ers Trade Targets: OT Morgan Moses, G Laken Tomlinson, CB Patrick Surtain II
McKivitz has been a liability at right tackle, responsible for two penalties and nine sacks allowed during the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus. Making a play for Ravens right tackle Morgan Moses, who is entering the final year of his contract, would make plenty of sense.
The 49ers could also use help at guard, and acquiring former 49er Laken Tomlinson—another 2025 free agent—from the Jets would be logical.
Though it ranked a respectable 14th in passing yards allowed, San Francisco’s secondary had its fair share of issues during stretches of the regular season and the playoffs. If the 49ers are willing to swing big, Denver cornerback Patrick Surtain II would be a prime trade target.
What Would It Take To Trade For Patrick Surtain II
The 49ers inquired about Surtain while looking for a big-name upgrade at either cornerback or pass rusher, according to ESPN.
After reportedly investigating Bears corner Jaylon Johnson, the 49ers traded a third-round pick to the Commanders for pass rusher Chase Young, who reunited with Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa.
The 49ers have made it clear that they are in the market for a top end cornerback.
After the Young trade, the Niners are now projected to have 11 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, one of which will be a compensatory pick.
With the hire of Ran Carthon as general manager of the Tennessee Titans and DeMeco Ryans as head coach of the Houston Texans, San Francisco will get another compensatory pick. After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey to the Broncos as a free agent last offseason, the 49ers get one more.
The 49ers certainly have the draft capital to go after a big name player like Surtain, it just depends on if they are willing to do it.
