Brock Purdy took the football world by storm in his first season as the San Francisco 49ers’ QB1. At this point, it’s safe to say that the 24-year-old is the real deal and that the Niners got him for an absolute bargain as a seventh-round pick back in 2022.
Purdy, however, hasn’t achieved icon status for the Niners just yet. At least according to Hall of Famer Patrick Willis, who himself left an undeniable mark on the franchise throughout a decorated eight-year career in San Francisco.
Brock Purdy or Colin Kaepernick? San Francisco 49ers Legend Chimes In
In a recent appearance on the RG3 and The Ones podcast with Robert Griffin III, Willis was asked to take his pick between Purdy and another Niners icon, Colin Kaepernick. The former All-Pro LB took some time before landing on Kaepernick as his pick:
“I’m going to have to take Kap,” declared Willis.
“A lot of people can go back and [nitpick] towards what it looked like towards his last couple years and whatnot with the Niners, or his last year with the Niners. He did what he needed to do. It may not have been in a way that—in a traditional quarterback throwing way, but, man, him, you (Griffin), you guys were something electrifying.”
Willis, who is part of the 2024 Hall of Fame class, did say, though, that it was a “tough decision” choosing between these two elite quarterbacks.
“I love them 1A and 1B,” Willis added.
