The San Francisco 49ers-Detroit Lions NFC Championship showdown was quite the memorable battle, and for plenty of good reasons. Sure enough, all of America enjoyed the showdown as well, as proven by the historic TV viewership it generated.
NFC Championship TV Numbers Not Seen Since 2012
According to the latest report from FOX Sports, the 49ers-Lions game generated 56,691,000 viewers, peaking at 58,967,000 viewers. It is also FOX’s most-viewed NFC Championship battle since 2012–when the 49ers and New York Giants played.
Overall, it is the fourth most-watched non-Super Bowl game in the network’s history.
To provide more insight on the monster TV ratings of the 49ers-Lions meetings, FOX also highlighted that it is 19 percent higher than the 2023 NFC Championship that involved the Niners and Philadelphia Eagles. Furthermore, it is 7 percent better than the 2023 AFC Championship that was broadcasted during the same window.
It’s not surprising why there were plenty of interest in the game, though. For one, the Lions had been one of the best feel-good stories of the season. After more than three decades without a playoff win, they went on a deep run into the postseason.
It was only a couple of years ago when the Lions were a three-win team. Now, they were able to transform into title contenders.
As for the 49ers, the star power they possess is no joke, which is why they always command attention whenever they play. They have two MVP candidates in Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey, so who wouldn’t want to see them?
San Francisco 49ers-Detroit Lions Game Didn’t Disappoint
Making things even better, the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions played an instant classic that will certainly go down as one of the best games in NFL history.
When it looked like the Lions would cruise to an easy victory after leading by 17 points at halftime, the Niners staged a historic comeback and erased the deficit in the third quarter. It set up a wild fourth quarter that saw both teams trade big plays over big plays.
In the end, however, the 49ers completed the come-from-behind win to secure the biggest comeback in the NFC championship. Sure enough, it only makes sense why a lot of people didn’t want to miss out on the action that was happening.
With the 49ers now heading to the Super Bowl to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs, expect those viewership numbers to go even higher.
