The San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers are two franchises that have a ton of optimism surrounding them.   The 49ers feel as though they are still Super Bowl conversation after losing in the NFC Championship last year.  While their roster is certainly one of the most talented in the league, a lot will depend on their 2022 rookie sensation QB Brock Purdy.

The Carolina Panthers gave up a lot to the Chicago Bears to go get QB Bryce Young in the 2023 NFL Draft.  They are hoping he proves to be their next franchise quarterback.  The Panthers may still be a few years away from being a contender in the league, and one name that has been on the trade block is now being associated with the 49ers.

In a move that some fans believe could lead to an even bigger move in the future, the 49ers restructured one of their current players’ contract on Saturday.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the 49ers restructured defensive lineman Arik Armstead’s contract. That decision has created nearly $12 million in cap space for them, leaving them with the most cap space in the league – $41.5 million.  Immediately fans speculated that the move was to bring in superstar defensive end Brian Burns from the Panthers.

The Panthers find themselves in the middle of a difficult situation when it comes to Brian Burns.  Burns, who is a two-time Pro Bowler and playing on his fifth-year rookie option this year, has reportedly never considered holding out in order to force a new contract.  However, that has since changed as Burns is currently not participating with the team.  There has been no update of Burns returning to team activities one day prior to the season opener.

What Could The 49ers Offer For Brian Burns?

The 49ers are projected to have five draft picks in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft.  They would likely have to part with at least one first round draft pick and possibly more.  The 49ers would also have to commit to a huge contract with Brian Burns in the same season they made Nick Bosa the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.
