All signs pointed to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy missing his team’s Week 8 tilt against the Cincinnati Bengals with a concussion he suffered last Monday. However, after entering concussion protocol two days ago, Purdy practiced for the second straight day and is pacing to play this weekend.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy: Concussed in Week 7
Purdy suffered a concussion at some point in the 49ers’ 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. He reportedly began to experience concussion symptoms on the team’s flight back to San Francisco and entered concussion protocol with the 49ers, starting a short week of preparation. Purdy will still need an independent neurologist to clear him for Sunday, but his rising participation level puts the second-year quarterback on pace to suit up in Week 8.

Brock Purdy: Mr. Irrelevant
Brock Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL draft, took over as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback last year after both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance went down with injuries. The Iowa State product immediately shined, going undefeated in the regular season (five starts) while throwing 13 touchdowns against four picks. However, he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in the NFC Championship.

Purdy returned as the starter this year and, for the most part, has played well under head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 23-year-old has thrown for 1,668 yards and 11 touchdowns against three picks in seven games.
Sam Darnold to Start if Purdy is Unavailable
Brock Purdy still needs to clear all the steps in the concussion protocol before getting the green light on Sunday. Although he is trending in the right direction, the 49ers are working on a short week after playing on Monday Night Football. Backup quarterback Sam Darnold will bark out the signals if Purdy can’t play on Sunday. The third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Darnold played with the Carolina Panthers last season, throwing seven touchdowns against three picks in six games. Darnold started his career with the New York Jets but got traded after three subpar seasons.
