The finale might not have been great, but the San Francisco 49ers have something to look forward to when the 2024 season finally comes around.
They still have one of the best NFL rosters in the coming season, and improvements in certain areas could easily see the team making a return to the Super Bowl next year.
However, their young quarterback feels responsible for the loss and is looking to bounce back stronger.
San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy takes responsibility for Super Bowl LVIII loss
The Iowa State product looked distraught when he talked to the media after his 49ers lost the big game to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. It’s evident to every person in the room that the young QB is taking this loss seriously.
Asked about his performance in the Super Bowl, Purdy was quick to carry the brunt of the responsibility for the team. He had this to say about the game, as reported by Bleacher Report’s Andrew Peters:
“When you have a good offense like the Chiefs do and what Mahomes can do, for us, it’s like, we have to score a touchdown,” Purdy said. “We had opportunities to do so I think. We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and operations and stuff, so, I got to be better in terms of leading the guys and just how I handle things in the huddle. Telling them what to expect, stuff like that. We have the team and the offense to score touchdowns and I think I failed to put our team in position to do that.”
It wasn’t like Purdy fumbled the bag and threw the game the same way he did against the Baltimore Ravens in the regular season. He actually finished Super Bowl LVIII with a solid 255 passing yards and one touchdown on 23 completed passes.
However, he wasn’t able to get both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk more involved than he would have liked, forcing Kyle Shanahan and the Niners offense to rely on Christian McCaffrey more than they would have liked.
Maybe it was the gulf in experience between Purdy and Patrick Mahomes that ultimately spelled the difference. The three-time Super Bowl MVP has been in multiple Super Bowls and understands what it takes to win when the eyes of the entire world is on you. Purdy will learn from this loss and move forward.
If there’s one good thing San Francisco 49ers fans could take away from the defeat, it’s the high character their QB1 has shown in defeat. If he keeps this mentality, it won’t be weird to see him play another Super Bowl again.
Hopefully, he’ll be the one lifting the Lombardi with the rest of the San Francisco 49ers.
