Kyle McCord wins the Ohio State starting job and Ryan Day explains why
Ryan Day has made his decision regarding Ohio State’s starting quarterback for the 2023 college football season as he named Kyle McCord QB1 against Indiana.
McCord beat out Devin Brown in a battle that went down to the wire as both quarterbacks impressed throughout the offseason and into summer camp. And now we know what separated the two and was the biggest decision in the end.
As Day met the media on Tuesday to make his decision, he revealed that McCord “made the routine plays routinely” and took care of the football during practices as Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors noted:
Ryan Day said Kyle McCord “made the routine plays routinely” and took care of the football in recent practices. “That’s why he is starting,” Day said.
Still, Day said he and Ohio State’s coaches “have confidence in both” McCord and Devin Brown.

Is Ohio State’s QB race officially over?
That’s not to say that Brown didn’t perform well but Day clearly went with the guy that excelled in key areas of practice. Brown also will play in the game at Indiana as Day revealed, pushing McCord the entire season to keep that starting job.
So there is a chance a move could be made if McCord does struggle at any time.
McCord is a former four-star recruit out of Philadelphia and the junior now gets his shot at taking Ohio State back to the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes are set to open up the season on the road at Indiana on Saturday as the Big Ten schedule gets underway early.
