With Russell Wilson officially released by the Denver Broncos, his search for a new team begins. He has already been linked with a number of teams even before his exit from the Colorado franchise, though it will likely take some time before he makes his decision after assessing the options he has.
Considering that Wilson is already 35 years old and showing some signs of decline, there were some experts suggesting that he could take a QB2 role in a team. Nonetheless, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN doesn’t see that happening at all.
Russell Wilson Not Interested in Being a QB2
In a recent piece detailing the best potential fits for Wilson, Fowler explored the idea of Wilson potentially taking a QB2 role. The ESPN analyst emphasized that it’s an unlikely scenario considering the general belief around the league about the former Seattle Seahawks star.
Many are still convinced that Wilson is a solid NFL starter, even for all his shortcomings with the Broncos. He did a decent job in the 2023 season, finishing with 3060 yards and 26 touchdowns against just eight interceptions.
While he’s in the lower half of the league when it comes to QB rating in 2023, he still did better than the likes of Kyler Murray, Justin Fields, Sam Howell and a few more. It is also worth noting that Wilson was in the Top 10 in passer rating throughout the season, ahead of the likes of Jordan Love, Jared Goff, Justin Herbert and Baker Mayfield to name a few.
With that said, Fowler expressed confidence that there is at least one team where Wilson can be a starter.
“I have a hard time believing that,” Fowler said on the possibility of Wilson being a no. 2 quarterback in 2024. “Most scouts I’ve spoken to consider him a quality starter, and there are enough quarterback-needy teams that at least one door should be open for him. Wilson is committed to not only remaining an NFL starter, but winning big. Plus, he has made $266 million in his career. Why would he be a backup?
“The most realistic outcome is Wilson is willing to accept the league minimum, knowing Denver is on the hook for the full $39 million in guarantees, a move he leverages into a starting job somewhere with no promises beyond 2024.”
Considering that Wilson has shown that he can still produce at a relatively high level, it’s certainly only right to assume that one quarterback-needy team will take a shot at him. He should be a low-risk, high reward signing, especially for a team hoping to contend quickly.
Russell Wilson’s Potential NFL Destinations
The Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings have been previously linked with Russell Wilson, and unsurprisingly so. Both the Steelers and Patriots could really use a reliable quarterback, and if the two teams can’t get one via the draft, Wilson presents a great option.
As for the Vikings, if Kirk Cousins ends up leaving in free agency, Wilson should be a nice addition for a team that is already prepared to compete.
Fowler mentioned these three teams as some of the best fits for Wilson. The Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders were also mentioned as potential landing spots.
It has yet to be seen what Wilson will do, but the interest should be there.
