Russell Wilson is set to become a free agent this offseason once the Denver Broncos release him. With that being said, there are high expectations that he’s going to join the Pittsburgh Steelers once his Colorado situation is settled.
However, former NFL star Robert Griffin III doesn’t think the Steelers are the right team for Wilson.
Russell Wilson-Pittsburgh Steelers Links
The Steelers need a quarterback, which is why they have been largely linked with Wilson for the most part of the young offseason.
While Kenny Pickett remains the QB1 and the team actually backed him up, Mike Tomlin have expressed his desire to bring in some competition for him. Wilson certainly seems to be the kind of QB that Pittsburgh needs, especially after they have been consistent playoff contenders but never Super Bowl titlists for over a decade now.
With an established program under Tomlin, the Steelers definitely fit Wilson who is looking to compete at the highest level and prove that he can still be a winning quarterback in the NFL if given the right supporting cast and a system that trusts him.
The odds are in favor of the Steelers landing Wilson, though it remains to be seen if anything will push through.
Robert Griffin Thinks the New England Patriots Are Better for Russell Wilson
Despite Russell Wilson being linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers, former NFL Pro Bowler Robert Griffin III has another team in mind that he thinks is a better fit for the veteran quarterback: the New England Patriots.
According to Griffin, Wilson will thrive more in New England, though he admitted that it’s unlikely to happen. He predicted that the Patriots would likely chase for Joe Flacco to back up the quarterback they will take in the 2024 NFL Draft with the no. 3 overall pick.
“The Patriots SHOULD SIGN Russell Wilson when he leaves the Denver Broncos, but they are MORE LIKELY to sign Joe Flacco who worked with OC Alex Van Pelt in Cleveland last year. They WILL DRAFT A QB this year, but should allow him to learn for a year and take over in year 2,” Griffin wrote.
It will definitely be interesting to see what the Patriots will actually do. For what it’s worth, they have been mentioned as a potential destination for Wilson as well, though the buzz has lessened in recent weeks.
One thing is clear, though: the Patriots could use a new quarterback in the post-Bill Belichick era.
