The NFL news happened bright and early on Wednesday as former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Russell Wilson was officially benched by coach Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos.
While Russell Wilson has not talked to the media or released a statement, he took to Twitter and published a simple post that shows he is looking toward the future.
God’s got me.
Looking forward to what’s next.— Russell Wilson (@DangeRussWilson) December 28, 2023
He has not been the problem statistically for the Denver Broncos potentially missing the NFL Playoffs as he has gone 297-of-447 (66.4 completion percentage) for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdown passes to eight interceptions while running 80 times for 341 yards (4.3 yards per carry) with three rushing touchdowns.
It is not clear that Wilson will be part of the Broncos by Week 1 of next season. He signed a five-year extension with the team before last season and is under contract until 2029 but reports have surfaced that he is expected to be released before March 2024.
What teams are going to be interested in the Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson?
The Denver Broncos are in a weird situation with the contract of Russell Wilson and will likely look for a trade at this point. The Broncos traded away their 2022 first-round pick, 2022 second-round pick, 2022 fifth-round pick, 2023 first-round pick and 2023 second-round pick. While they are no longer giving the Seattle Seahawks picks, they still are in a weird position with draft picks.
However, with teams needing a quarterback there are going to be a few teams interested in Wilson under center. One team that seems like a great fit would be the Atlanta Falcons as they would have wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts getting a legitimate threat under center, something the Falcons have not had since Matt Ryan.
The Broncos have been trying to step up and one spot that would be interesting would be a Russell Wilson trade to Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have not gotten the production out of Kenny Pickett they wanted in the first two seasons and Wilson could really be a step in the right direction.
With Pickett having two years (three if they exercise the fifth-year option) after this year, they can either trade him in the package or use him as a backup quarterback option.
