The Kansas City Chiefs hold the 32nd overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. After winning back-to-back Super Bowls, it seems like the Chiefs are the early favorites to win in 2024 and go for the three-peat. Here we will discuss a draft scenario for the Chiefs that not many people are talking about.
Kansas City Offseason
The Chiefs didn’t have the best regular season in 2023, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes was still able to lead them to another Super Bowl. This makes the Chiefs back-to-back Super Bowl champions as they have won two in a row. This year’s Chiefs team was very different than it was in the past. Instead of being led by their explosive offense, the team was carried by its incredible defense.
Kansas City’s offense struggled for the majority of the season. This was mainly due to the lack of production from their receivers. Luckily, the Chiefs still had Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. Rookie receiver Rashee Rice also had a great second half of the season to solidify himself as the Chiefs WR1.
With Travis Kelce getting older there is a major need for weapons in the Kansas City offense. The Chiefs tried to fill that need during the offseason when they signed wide receiver Marquise Brown to a one-year deal. Unfortunately, just a couple of weeks later, promising rookie receiver Rashee Rice has gotten himself in trouble after being tangled up in a street racing accident. With unknowns about Rice’s future, along with an aging Travis Kelce, it seems likely that the Chiefs would be looking to target an offensive weapon early in the draft.
Another offseason move the Chiefs made was moving on from cornerback Lajarius Sneed. After not being able to reach a contract extension, the Kansas City franchise tagged and traded Sneed to the Titans. This leaves the Chiefs with Trent Mcduffie and a couple of young players to fill out their cornerback room. While Mcduffie has been a great corner for the Chiefs, he typically plays more of a nickel corner role in their defense. This means the Chiefs have a hole at the outside corner.
NFL Draft
Rumors have been swirling about Kansas City trading up in the draft. Most people would think they would be trading up for a receiver but it seems like they could also be trading up for one of the top corners. While there will still be good corners and receivers for the Chiefs to pick from at 32, they could look to trade up to get one of the top guys.
If the Chiefs are going to trade up to draft a cornerback, they are going to have to make a significant jump depending on who they are trying to get. If they are trying to get one of the best corners in the class it is likely that they will have to trade up into the top 15, but if they are trying to get a play like Kool-Aid McKinstry, they should only have to move up into the top 25.
Either way, we will find out if Kansas City will be trading up in just a few weeks at the 2024 NFL draft.
