Whenever the Rams and 49ers get together, the 49ers seem to have their number, except in the playoffs. While I don’t really care who wins these games, I would experience schadenfreude should Sean McVay lose this game. So go 49ers! Also, one of the groomsmen at my wedding is a huge 49ers fan, so I owe him my support.
Game Overview for Rams 49ers
San Francisco 49ers – 1.5
O/U: 42.5
Money Line: San Francisco – 130
Rams Key Injuries
- CB Cobie Durant is OUT with a hamstring issue.
- CB David Long is OUT with a groin problem.
- CB Troy Hill is on IR also with a groin problem.
- C Brian Allen is OUT with a knee injury.
- G David Edwards is OUT with a concussion.
These two injuries to the Rams’ offensive line are significant. Allen particularly is one of the better centers in the league. The line will have their hands full with the 49er defensive front.
49ers Key Injuries
- LB Azeez Al-Shaair is OUT with a knee injury.
- DE Arik Armstead is QUESTIONABLE with a foot issue.
- LT Trent Williams is OUT with an ankle injury. This is a problem for the 49ers’ offensive line.
- If you are a 49er RB, know that the football gods despise you and you are either injured or about to be.
- Tyrion Davis-Price Lannister is OUT with an ankle problem.
- Jeff Willson has a heel issue and was limited all week.
- TE Ross Dwelley was limited all week with a rib injury and is QUESTIONABLE.
Rams 49ers Player Pool
Obviously, you can start with the likes of Deebo, Cooper Kupp, and the two QBs. Who else is on the table though?
Brandon Aiyuk. The Rams’ secondary is banged up and not as good as they were last year. Jalen Ramsey could spend much of the evening guarding Deebo. Aiyuk will likely be running routes against rookie Derion Kendrick who was targeted 16 times in week three whilst allowing nine catches for 102 yards.
George Kittle shows up a few times each year to destroy a slate. If Dwelley is out or limited, there might be more work for Kittle to do.
Juan Jennings is WR3 for this group. I could see the 49ers wanting to expose this secondary with three or four WR sets, especially if they are trailing in this game.
Cam Akers and Darrel Henderson. Who’s it going to be? Good luck figuring it out.
The Rams WR group is one I’m not too interested in outside of Cooper Kupp. As you’ll see below, it might be a tough night for the Rams offense.
Rams 49ers Defenses
The Rams DST is the second-best group in the league vs RBs. It might be a tough night for Jeff Wilson, but the 49ers will probably work Deebo into the ground game. However, the Rams are the second worst team against WRs through three weeks. They are second best vs TEs and bottom 10 in the NFL against QBs.
The 49ers’ DST ranks second best in the league against QBs, 9th best against RBs, 3rd best against WRs, and the best against TEs.
How the Game Should Go
I can see why the point total for tonight is low. This should be a defensive struggle, with the Rams, in particular, being sluggish on offense. I do see the game plan from the Rams side to likely be all about establishing the run while playing at a slow pace to keep their limited secondary as rested as possible. I would still expect a bunch of targets to go Cooper Kupp’s way.
Captain Options
One of the 49ers pass-catchers, please!
