The Texas football program is set to play in the SEC Championship Game during their inaugural season in the conference. The No. 2 Longhorns (11-1) will play the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2) for the right to earn a bye in round one of the College Football Playoff.
Georgia got the better of Texas in their Oct. 19 matchup when the Bulldogs won in a game they dominated 30-15 in Austin. Neither quarterback played well in the contest, with Carson Beck throwing three interceptions for Georgia, and Quinn Ewers was only effective for Texas in the third quarter when he tossed two touchdown passes.
Quinn Ewers has been off lately
Ewers hasn’t been playing well as of late, especially since the second quarter of Texas’ 31-14 win over Kentucky on Nov. 23. The junior from Southlake, Texas suffered an ankle injury that had him listed as probable to play Texas A&M in Week 14. Ewers played on Saturday night during the Longhorns’ 17-7 win over the Aggies at Kyle Field.
Ewers wore an ankle brace during the game. He went 17-of-28 for 218 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win. The lone interception inside the red zone turned into a pick-six–Texas A&M’s only points on the night. Ewers had another costly turnover in the second half, a fumble inside the red zone.
Texas Football gets good news on Ewers’ injury
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian suggested on Monday that Ewers would practice similar to last week. However, the injury report appears to have good news for Texas. Per the SEC’s injury report, Texas did not list Ewers as being hurt, which is good news for his availability against the Bulldogs for Saturday’s game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Texas does have one medical mystery for Saturday.
One key player’s status is unclear
Longhorns left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. was listed as questionable. Per Chip Brown with 24/7 Sports, Banks might not play Georgia despite Sarkisian saying he’d be available to play He’s wearing the same medical device Ewers was last week.
“Let’s get to an injury update on left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., who is wearing the same Tay-Co ankle brace during this week’s practice leading up to the SEC Championship Game against Georgia on Saturday (3 p.m. ABC) that Quinn Ewers wore in practice (and in the Texas A&M game) last week,” Brown wrote. “Several sources close to the situation said Banks will likely be “available” on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. But that doesn’t mean Banks will play in this game, the sources said.”
Brown could be a big miss for Texas on Saturday. Georgia’s defense put Ewers (and Arch Manning) under constant duress during their first matchup.
