A shorthanded No. 7 Notre Dame football is set to play No. 2 Georgia in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal on Wednesday. An insider suggested the Fighting Irish would have a quarterback waiting for them following their appearance in the CFP.

In the last two seasons, Notre Dame has added two starting quarterbacks to their roster via the transfer portal. Sam Hartman transferred from Wake Forrest to the Irish before the 2023 season. Riley Leonard transferred from Duke before this season, and he’s helped lead Notre Dame to a 12-1 record and a matchup in the Allstate Sugar Bowl against the Bulldogs at Caesars Superdome.

During his national signing day press conference, Notre Dame head Marcus Freeman said the team would not add a quarterback via the portal in this cycle.

“We have no plans of going to the transfer portal for a quarterback,” Freeman said.

The Irish are set to have quarterbacks Blake Hebert, CJ Carr, Kenny Minchey, and Steve Angeli on the roster in 2025.

Per Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd, the Irish could have another. Speaking on his podcast, Cowherd said Notre Dame fans shouldn’t be shocked to see a “well-known” quarterback transfer to South Bend when the CFP ends.

“Notre Dame, Riley Leonard is going to the pros, there’s rumors that they may be in the portal for a quarterback at the college level that many of you have seen play for a big program,” Cowherd said. “So I won’t give that away yet, but don’t be surprised if a very, very well-known college quarterback transfers to Notre Dame once the playoff ends. And I think they’re in a good spot.”

Many fans thought Coherd was talking about Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers or Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. Ewers makes the most sense, as he’s in the CFP.

Texas is expected to move on to Arch Manning for the 2025 season, and Ewers could have his draft stock rise by playing well for Notre Dame.

Here are some of the top reactions on social media of fans thinking Ewers is headed to Notre Dame.

“Quinn Ewers to Notre Dame,” believes one fan.

“Gonna be ewers most likely. His draft stock dropped a lot so he won’t declare plus Texas will run with arch next year,’ wrote a fan.

“It’s okay we can say it’s Quinn Ewers,” posted another.

“Jalen Milroe or Quinn Ewers transferring to Notre Dame,” asked a fan.

“He always wants to be the smartest guy in the room when in reality he’s becoming as bad as Finebaum. We are going for a Carr ride next year,” suggested another.
