The Indianapolis Colts have a bright future to look forward to when it comes to the 2024 season. With a high-potential player like Anthony Richardson playing under center, the future is bright for a team that’s trying to get out of the AFC South.
However, the team also understands that it takes more than fantastic quarterback play to get a shot at winning the Super Bowl. They have plenty of areas in the team they need to address, and they’ll be hoping that they find what they need in the upcoming draft combine.
Horseshoe Huddle’s Andrew Moore addresses some of the key problems that affected the Colts last season and see how the team could address these shortcomings through the draft.
Areas of focus for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2024 NFL Draft Combine
Wideouts
The most glaring weakness for the 2023 Indianapolis Colts was the lack of a reliable wide receiver room. Only Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs were the only reliable receivers for the Colts last season, and the rest of the WR and TE rooms need to step up their game if they want to get out of the AFC South as division champs.
Moore suggested looking at LSU’s Michael Thomas, Western Kentucky’s Malachi Corley, and Virginia’s Malik Washington as possible additions to the team, but the wideout class is incredibly deep that they can probably find what they’re looking for in the latter rounds of the draft.
The rookie TEs he recommended include Georgia’s Brock Bowers, Penn State’s Theo Johnson, and Kansas State’s Ben Sinnott.
Defense
Aside from wideouts, the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive efforts also needed a major overhaul. They allowed 3842 opposing passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 2105 rushing yards, and 22 rushing TDs during the 2023 campaign.
If they want to stand up to the Houston Texans, they need to overhaul their entire defensive scheme. While they only have a couple of picks in the draft, it wouldn’t be surprising to see if they selected at least four defensive players in this year’s draft.
