The Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the most notable quarterback competitions entering training camp this season. Originally, it was veteran QB Russell Wilson who appeared to get the nod over the younger Justin Fields. However, a calf injury to Wilson resulted in Fields being declared the starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.
After the Steelers defeated the Falcons, there was a debate as to who would be the starting quarterback in Week 2. Now, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has provided an answer to the debate.
Justin Fields to Start Again in Week 2
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Tomlin revealed that Justin Fields was once again going to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in Week 2. This comes after he helped the Steelers secure an 18-10 victory over the Falcons in Week 1. After spending his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears, it appears Fields is getting a bigger chance to shine with his new team.
Pittsburgh Steelers and Justin Fields in Week 1
Part of the reason why the Steelers brought in Wilson and Fields was because their offense left something to be desired last season. Unfortunately, those concerns from last season have not gone away after Pittsburgh’s Week 1 performance.
The Steelers had just 270 total yards last week. Justin Fields had just 156 passing yards and failed to score a touchdown of any kind. In fact, Pittsburgh did not score a touchdown in that entire game. Instead, it was K Chris Boswell who shined, as he kicked six field goals in Sunday’s win against Atlanta.
Fields had 23 pass attempts in last week’s game. On top of this, he showed off his speed with 57 rushing yards.
No Reunion for Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson’s absence for next week is even more notable because of who the Steelers are playing. Pittsburgh is going on the road to face the Denver Broncos next week. This is relevant because Wilson played for the Denver Broncos in his two prior seasons.
This was set up to be a reunion between Wilson and the Broncos. However, that will have to wait, as Wilson is set to sit on the sidelines for this Week 2 clash.
Wilson’s Denver stint was certainly a chapter of his NFL career to forget. He had a record of just 11-19 with the Broncos. On top of this, he had nearly 3,600 passing yards, 42 touchdown passes, and 19 interceptions during this stretch.
