The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most notable quarterback rooms in the NFL. That is because they acquired veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this past offseason.
For a while, it was looking like Wilson would win the quarterback competition and get the Week 1 start against the Atlanta Falcons. However, a sudden injury to Wilson put these plans in serious jeopardy. Now, it appears we have an answer as to whether he can still start in Week 1.
Justin Fields Likely to Start in Week 1
According to Mike Garafalo of the NFL Network, the Pittsburgh Steelers revealed that Justin Fields is likely getting the nod in Week 1 against the Falcons. Russell Wilson reportedly needs more time to recover from his calf injury despite earlier reports revealing that he said he could play in today’s game if needed.
Garafalo did say that Wilson was going to be evaluated pregame to see what his current status is. However, the expected belief amongst the Steelers organization is for Fields to play today. Garafalo went on to say that the Steelers have plenty of confidence in Fields and they have seen continued improvement during training camp from him.
What to Expect From Justin Fields
Justin Fields is looking for redemption with the Steelers. He was originally drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. However, the Bears chose to part ways with Fields after just three seasons and went on to draft QB Caleb Williams with the first overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Fields has a mere 10-28 record over the course of his career with a completion percentage just over 60. He has 6,674 passing yards with 40 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions.
His career rushing stats are more impressive for a quarterback. Fields has 2,220 career rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.
Pittsburgh Steelers Moving Forward
So, what should we expect from the Pittsburgh Steelers? Well, despite struggling mightily last season offensively, the Steelers still managed to sneak into the playoffs. Now, Pittsburgh is hoping they can do more than just make a brief postseason appearance now that they have upgraded the quarterback position.
As for Justin Fields, he could get a chance to prove that he is the man for the job. We will have to see how things play out in Week 1 and moving forward.
