“The Starter At Quarterback”: Pittsburgh Steelers Need To Figure Out Most Important Position This Offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished with a 10-7 record during the regular season. Pittsburgh lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card round on the road.

Many Steelers fans wanted the team to part ways with head coach Mike Tomlin, but the team decided to bring him back next season. At one point in the season, Pittsburgh had a chance to be the number one seed in the AFC, but they faltered down the stretch. The Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase wants to see better results in the postseason as they have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season.

PFF Has One Burning Question For the Pittsburgh Steelers This Offseason

Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus wrote about the one major roster decision that each NFL team will have to focus on this offseason. Locker said about the Pittsburgh Steelers:

    “The starter at quarterback

The Steelers headed into the 2024 season with two fliers at quarterback on their roster in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Unfortunately, a year removed, there doesn’t appear to be a simple answer as to who will be Pittsburgh’s starter in 2025.

After replacing Fields as the starter, Wilson proved generally effective but fell victim to poorer play down the stretch, as evidenced by a 64.3 PFF passing grade and a 25.7% pressure-to-sack ratio over the final four regular-season games. Meanwhile, Fields impressed through his first three starts but compiled a 5.4% turnover-worthy play rate in his last three nods.

While Wilson seems to be the better fit on paper, his higher price tag and older age could mean that Pittsburgh turns to Fields. A wild card like Sam Darnold, Derek Carr or Aaron Rodgers is also very much in play, as is taking a quarterback early in this year’s draft. Even if one of Wilson or Fields re-signs early this offseason, it doesn’t mean that the Steelers will be completely done at the position.”

There is a solid chance that the Pittsburgh Steelers move off of both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson this offseason. Fields was the starting quarterback for Pittsburgh at the beginning of the 2024 season until they turned it over to Wilson. Neither quarterback lit up the scoreboard last season.

Head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith need to find the right quarterback for the Steelers for the long haul. They have struggled at the position since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

    Aaron Rodgers Released On Thursday

On Thursday, the New York Jets announced that they are going to be moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason. It is possible that the Steelers could sign Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season assuming Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are both not back next season.

Also, there is a chance that the Pittsburgh Steelers could look to trade for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. It feels like a long shot they would get him, but it is worth a call. No one knows who the Steelers quarterback will be for next season. There is a chance that Pittsburgh may need to punt on the 2025 season to get the next franchise quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft also.
