While the Pittsburgh Steelers have voiced out their confidence in Kenny Pickett to be their starter in the 2024 NFL season, there are plenty of rumors going around that the former first-round pick will take a seat back to someone else’s in the coming season — or at least have serious competition for the QB1 role. That competition can very much be expected to come from the NFL Draft, with the Steelers holding the 20th pick.
Being that far from the top of the draft board means that the Pittsburgh Steelers are virtually out of the running for the likes of Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans, Jayden Daniels of the LSU Tigers, and Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels. But they have a more realistic shot at Washington Huskies product Michael Penix Jr, who shined bright in the 2023 college football season.
The Steelers also have a pick in the second round (51st overall), and if Penix is still available by the time Pittsburgh gets to select a player for that spot, the team should go ahead and take him off the board, according to Curt Popejoy if Steelers Wire.
This is something of a wild card pick here but it is worth a flyer if Michael Penix can do what he did at Washington in an NFL offense. His athleticism is off the charts and he is fearless when he starts to sling it around.
Should The Pittsburgh Steelers Take Michael Penix Jr. At The 2024 NFL Draft?
Indeed it would be a gamble on the part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, if they are looking at taking Penix, to wait until their turn in the second round to get him. There is a good chance he’s gone by that time. But nobody really knows about that, as the NFL Draft board can be so fluid and unpredictable.
In the 2023 season, Penix led the Huskies all the way to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, while recording 4,903 passing yards with 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
