Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was playing at an MVP level during the 2022 season, but he took a step back during the 2023 season. One of the reasons why Hurts played so well in 2022 was because of offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.
Steichen was not the offensive coordinator last season because he was the Indianapolis Colts new head coach. His presence around Hurts was missed big time. For the 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles’ new offensive coordinator will be Kellen Moore.
Moore in the past was the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers. Eagles fans hope Kellen Moore can get Hurts back into his MVP form from two years ago.
94 WIP’s Howard Eskin Made a Bold Statement About Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts This Season
WIP’s Howard Eskin made a bold claim about Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts before the start of the 2024 season. He said:
“I think he needs to have a good year or they’re going to Carson Wentz him if he doesn’t have a good year. He’s got to have a good year and he can’t make excuses.”
Jalen Hurts is only 25 years old and he is under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles for the next several years. Last season, he completed 65.4% of his passes for 3,858 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 touchdowns. Hurts also rushed for 605 yards on 157 carries and 15 touchdowns, along with averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
He was a second-round pick (53rd overall selection) in the 2020 NFL Draft from Oklahoma. Hurts started the final four games of his rookie season because head coach Doug Pederson benched quarterback Carson Wentz for his play.
When Jalen Hurts started, the writing was on the wall for Wentz. The following offseason, Hurts became the starting quarterback and Carson Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts.
Kenny Pickett Is the Backup Quarterback For the Eagles
Kenny Pickett will be the backup quarterback this season for the Eagles. He was acquired in a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh gave up on him just after two seasons. The Steelers signed Russell Wilson and also traded for Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears this offseason.
Pickett last season completed 62.0% of his passes for 2,070 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. He lost his starting job last season to Mason Rudolph. Rudolph was also not brought back by the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason and he signed a new contract with the Tennessee Titans.
Philadelphia should have no plans to bench Jalen Hurts for Kenny Pickett this season. Philadelphia Eagles fans do get restless at times. Head coach Nick Sirianni should only bench Hurts for Pickett if he gets hurt and that will be it.
