Philadelphia Eagles Tried To Make Blockbuster Trade For Star Quarterback In 2012

The Philadelphia Eagles seem to be set at the quarterback situation now. Jalen Hurts is a rising star, although there have been some concerns about him after a down season in 2023. Kenny Pickett was also acquired during the offseason in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the quarterback situation is healthy right now, there was a time not that long ago that the team was trying to find a new franchise quarterback.

Even though 2012 seems like ages ago, it’s not that long in the grand scheme of things. However, during that offseason, the Eagles tried to pull off a massive blockbuster trade for a franchise quarterback.

Back in the 2012 NFL Draft, Andrew Luck was the main prize to be had. With the Indianapolis Colts having the No. 1 overall pick, they had a choice. Take Luck and rebuild around him or bring Peyton Manning back.

Despite the fact that Manning was the face of the franchise, Jim Irsay and company opted to move on and draft Luck.

That wasn’t due to a lack of teams trying to convince the Colts to trade the No. 1 pick. Among those teams was the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to PHLY’s Zach Berman, the Eagles tried to “manically trade up” for Luck. Unfortunately, they were unable to get that done with the Colts.

Instead, Philadelphia ended up draft Nick Foles in the third round. Luck would have been a very interesting fit with the Eagles, although his career did not go according to plan in Indianapolis.

Luck took a beating behind a poor offensive line with the Colts. He decided to retire after just six years.

In the 86 career games that Luck played in the NFL, he completed 60.8 percent of his pass attempts for 23,671 yards, 171 touchdowns, and 83 interceptions. He also picked up 1,590 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

While the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t end up pulling off the trade for Luck, it’s interesting to hear this story. Luck did have a star-studded NFL career, but the way it ended left a sour taste for Colts fans.

Luck will always be a story of what could have been. Without the injuries, he seems destined to win a Super Bowl and become an all-time great.
