Legendary NFL reporter Peter King went out with a bang when he capped off his Football Morning In America column with a major dose of reckless speculation aimed at the Chicago Bears. Bears fans reacted to King’s belief the Bears would trade the first overall pick and keep quarterback Justin Fields.
Peter King predicts the Chicago Bears keep Justin Fields
As Robin Adams with GH discussed, the generous return the Bears would receive in King’s trade proposal would help the team fill out their roster for years to come and might save Fields’ career:
“I suppose the Bears are going to trade the top pick. I know nothing, but that seems to be the way the wind is blowing. What I say: The Bears could keep Justin Fields (and should), and trade the first pick down once or twice, and build the kind of supporting cast a team needs to contend. Suppose GM Ryan Poles traded the top pick down one spot to Washington (which would take Caleb Williams), and got the second pick, a second-round pick and a 2025 first-round pick in return.
“Then suppose Poles traded the second pick to Atlanta at eight, and the Falcons picked one of the other quarterbacks. In return, Chicago gets the eighth pick, Atlanta’s second-round pick, and first- and second-round picks next year. Imagine moving from 1 to 8 and ending up with this draft haul:
- The eighth and ninth (their own) overall picks in round one this year.
- Second-round picks from Washington and Atlanta this year.
- Three first-round picks and two second-round picks in 2025.
“For moving down seven picks in the first round, the Bears could end up with nine picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts. Instant infrastructure.”
For a team that has been so unsuccessful for so long, King’s idea is certainly intriguing. With so much draft capital, Chicago could finally give Fields the team he deserves.
Chicago Bears fans react to Peter King’s trade proposal
Some ideas are duds. I really admire King’s work. Reading FMIA has been one of my favorite Monday treasures since I started covering the league. King provided fantastic insight into the infrastructure of the sport.
But not all of his ideas are winners. Unfortunately, King’s final column included a bad prediction. King admitted he didn’t have any insider information on the topic, but he felt the wind blowing in that direction.
One doesn’t understand where the wind is coming from. Albert Breer and other NFL insiders believe the Bears will have a trade-in place for Fields this week.
Fans reacted to King’s final prognostication for FMIA. Here are the best reactions to King thinking the Bears will keep Fields.
Just funny to say “the wind is blowing that way” when it’s clear all of the media thinks the opposite is gonna happen, I wonder what he has heard 🤔🤔.

It also gives me more confidence that the Bears need to stay pat and draft Williams. He even says in his column he advocated the colts taking Wadsworth over manning

Brad Biggs: based off what I’ve seen/heard in the building, it’s my opinion the Bears are drafting a QB.
Certain Bears fans: IDIOT!!! If it’s not from Poles’ mouth I’m not listening!
Peter King: i know nothing… but they’re sticking with Fields
Same Bears fans: I KNEW IT!!!!!

Just like the speculation Rappaport, Scheffter, etc have said about Williams. Their hints were all based on what other executives said they would do. Also, Kiper and Yates talked this weekend about the Bears are going to trade the pick. This points to Poles playing this perfectly
